DJ Certification

Unfortunately there is no such thing as a DJ licence, however there are certain certificates that you should request proof of when hiring a DJ. Not requesting proof could result in your DJ being asked to leave your venue because he/she does not have the correct certification.

It’s also worth checking to see whether the DJ is a member of any professional organisations. This generally means that the DJ adheres to a code of conduct and may well be proactive in ensuring that he/she only provides the best entertainment to his customers.

I have the following certificates:

Public Liability Insurance (P.L.I.)

For your own peace of mind, it is important that your DJ is covered for all eventualities. If one of your guests should injure themselves on the disco equipment, and the DJ doesn’t have cover, they could claim directly off you. Likewise, if your DJ damages any of the fixtures or fittings at your venue, you could be held responsible, as the hirer, if your DJ isn’t covered. Many venues insist on seeing evidence that your DJ has PLI. Check the small print on your venue hire terms and conditions form – chances are it’s in there.

Portable Appliance Tested equipment (P.A.T.)

When searching for a suitable mobile disco, you’ll probably notice that many (but not all) companies will make reference to their equipment being ‘PAT tested’. Portable Appliance (or PAT) testing is a requirement that all mobile disco companies should adhere to, by law. It involves the testing of all electrical equipment to be used at your event that requires a mains supply. It’s generally carried out every year and it ensures that all appliances are electrically safe to use. As mentioned, it is a legal requirement for the DJ to have their equipment tested. This is to comply with the The Electricity at Work Act 1989. PAT tested equipment is also needed to satisfy the requirements of the DJ’s insurance company (assuming the DJ is insured!).

Criminal Records Bureau (C.R.B.)

The CRB check searches your details against criminal records and other sources, including the Police National Computer. The check may reveal convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings – of which I have none!

I am a member of the following organisations:

Alliance of mobile and party DJ’s (AMPdj)
Wedding DJ Alliance (WdjA)
National Association of Disc Jockeys (NADJ)
